National Science Foundation 101 Webinar

Join Dr. Anna Fisher, Program Director, Developmental Sciences Program, and Dr. Steven Breckler, Program Director, Social Psychology Program, from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) for an overview of the NSF, its organizational structure, research funding priorities, and how to build relationships with program directors. In this 1-hour webinar, you will learn more about (1) How the NSF is structured; (2) The focus of the Developmental Sciences and Social Psychology programs; (3) How to identify grant opportunities and submit investigator-initiated opportunities; (4) How NSF implements its merit review process; (5) How to identify the best fit for your proposal; (6) Tips for success in communicating with NSF program directors; and (7) NSF resources and training. This webinar is targeted toward early career researchers and advanced doctoral students. Although most of NSF’s funding opportunities are U.S.-based, the presenters will touch on opportunities to partner with international collaborators and to propose research that includes a component outside of the U.S. Participants can submit questions for the presenters ahead of time upon registration for the webinar. Moderated by Dr. Suzanne Le Menestrel, SRCD Director of Science Affairs.

Addressing Equity and Inclusion in Your Research Mentoring (Webinar)

This workshop is designed for mentors of undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and junior faculty. During this workshop, participating faculty will learn how to acknowledge the impact of conscious and unconscious assumptions, privilege, stereotype threat, and biases in the mentor-mentee relationship. Participants will use culturally responsive mentoring principles to guide them in talking about cultural diversity matters with their mentees. Through group discussion, case studies, and role play, mentors have the opportunity to learn and practice mentoring skills that deal with diversity matters.

Prior to attending the workshop, participants will need to complete a 40 minute online module. This awareness-raising activity will help mentors take full advantage of the workshop.

Federal funding agencies are calling for evidence-based development of mentoring skills as an important component of successful grant proposals. By participating in this workshop faculty will develop and/or enhance their mentoring skills and receive resources and materials to support effective mentoring of graduate students and postdoctoral trainees.

Attendance is limited to 30 faculty members from any discipline although many of the case studies come from STEM fields.

Better Research through Better Mentoring – Part 1 And Part 2 (Workshop)

Strong mentorship has been linked to enhanced mentee productivity, self-efficacy, career satisfaction, and is an important predictor of the academic success of scientists and engineers in training. The Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER) has developed a curriculum which we use in an upcoming session for faculty. By participating in this workshop faculty will develop and/or enhance their mentoring skills and receive resources and materials to support effective mentoring of graduate students and postdoctoral trainees.

Attendance is limited to 30 faculty members from any discipline although many of the case studies come from STEMM fields.

These mentoring workshops are now part of an endorsement in Research Mentoring from the University Institute on Teaching and Learning. This endorsement can be used to document in your CV that you participated in this activity as well as in training grants, trainee fellowship applications, etc. Learn more about the endorsement here

Updates to NIH Training Grant Applications (Zoom)

The NIH Institutional National Research Service Award (NRSA) Training Grant Program application is undergoing changes that take effect for submissions due on or after January 25, 2025. These modifications impact the PHS 398 Research Training Program Plan Form (the Recruitment Plan to Enhance Diversity will become its own attachment instead of part of the 25-page program plan) and the NRSA Training Tables (NIH is updating the NRSA Data Tables to reduce burden on the research community).

Additionally, for the parent Training Grant Notice of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs), NIH is:

  • Better-defining expectations for mentor training;
  • Clarifying positive career outcomes within the scope of research and related careers aligned with the NIH mission; and
  • Including “Training in the Responsible Conduct of Research” and the “Recruitment Plan to Enhance Diversity” as items that contribute to the overall impact score.

Wondering about the implications for your application preparation? Consider participating in this live, virtual event where NIH experts will provide insights and updates on these changes, concluding with a live Q&A session.
