Do you compensate participants who take part in your research? The Office of Responsible Research Practices, College of Optometry, and Department of Psychology are offering an updated series about participant compensation considerations in both medical and non-medical research.

By the end of the second session, to be held on Thursday, February 29th, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. via CarmenZoom, participants will be able to:

  • List administrative requirements to select allowable payment methods, pay participants, and monitor compensation, and
  • Identify available resources for managing research compensation.

CARE Panel: Considering Risk of Research to Non-participants (Zoom)

This panel will consider how to think about risk to bystanders in research. Among the questions that will be discussed are: Should IRBs take bystander risk into account when approving studies? If so, to what sorts of protections are bystanders entitled? Are there upper limits of risk that we can impose on non-participants in research? What are the potential kinds of harm to non-participants in research?

This panel will discuss how scientific and academic journals should respond to the growing concerns related to large language models (LLMs) and authorship. For example, are concerns regarding the use of LLMs for research writing overblown? Are there any appropriate ways for using LLMs in academic scholarship? Should journal networks update policies so that researchers can specify that text generated by ChatGPT (or any other AI tools) was not used in their work?

CARE Panel: The Ethics of Human Challenge Studies (Zoom)

Human challenge trials, which intentionally expose healthy volunteers to disease, have historically been part of scientific research and have contributed to vital scientific advances in drug and vaccine development. Nevertheless, such research has been criticized as conflicting with the guiding principle in medicine to do no harm. This panel will discuss: under what conditions, if ever, are such trials appropriate? And are there upper limits of risk that we can ask participants to incur for the purposes of research?

IPR Special Topics Seminar I: Data Management Tips to Improve Research Efficiency and Quality (In-person or virtual)

In nearly every research project, your most important collaborator (you from 5 months ago) does not reply to emails.  Fortunately, there are several strategies for handling these types of problems.  In this seminar we will focus on best practices and tools for managing your data and improving your research efficiency. Using modular batch scripts, GitHub, markdown, etc. will make resubmitting your R&R a breeze, while also facilitating your collaborations with students advisors, and colleagues.  These tips and tricks are portable across stat packages (e.g., Stata, R, SAS) and can be employed with either Windows or macOS.

This session is led by Research Scientist Jason Thomas.

Missing Data Workshop

The QMC is hosting a 90-minute workshop on missing data, with a particular focus on addressing missing data in regression analysis. The overall goal of this workshop is to give attendees the tools to be able to assess the nature of missingness within datasets, and build attendees’ capacities to address missingness within their research. The workshop will use R, and directions can be found below to download R.

Menglin Xu, PhD

The workshop will be led by Dr. Menglin Xu. Menglin Xu is a Ph.D. graduate from the Quantitative Research, Evaluation, and Measurement (QREM) program of EHE, OSU. Menglin has teaching and research experience in multivariate statistics, psychometrics, causal inference, longitudinal data analysis, Bayesian statistics, meta-analysis, and Monte Carlo simulations, among others. Serving as a biostatistician at Medical Center of OSU, Menglin is using her expertise in experimental design and statistics to support professional works in diversified areas of health sciences, psychology, and education.

Capacity Building, Dissemination, and Stakeholder Convening Support Virtual Information Session

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) plans to award up to $25 million in fiscal year 2024 as part of the Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award Program. This program supports projects that encourage active, meaningful involvement of patients, caregivers, clinicians, and other healthcare stakeholders as integral members of the patient-centered outcomes research/comparative clinical effectiveness research (PCOR/CER) enterprise. Letters of Inquiry (LOIs) for the next cycle are due 9/28/2023. Please see attached award overview and proposal requirements.

Interested and eligible researchers are encouraged to attend a virtual information session Tuesday, August 15, 2023, from 2-3pm hosted by the Office of Foundation Relations, which will include a 30-minute information session and 30-minute Q&A.  No advance registration is required.

Key Definitions: CER & PCOR

  • CER is comparative clinical effectiveness research. It is research that compares the outcomes, including possible benefits and harms, of two or more available healthcare options to determine what works best for which patients under what circumstances. Outcomes are the measurable results, positive or negative, of a healthcare option.
  • PCOR is patient-centered outcomes research. It is a type of CER. PCOR is CER that compares outcomes that matter most to stakeholders, such as patients and those who care for them, healthcare providers and healthcare advocates. Patient-centered outcomes research requires the engagement of stakeholders as active partners in research. By sharing their lived experience and expertise, stakeholders influence research to be more patient-centered, relevant and useful.
