As a theory and method, Black women’s experiences have long been included in literature. Still, others continue to dispute its applicability, particularly in social science, from a methodological standpoint. In this conversation, In this QualLab Lunch, Dr. Kaleb Briscoe from Mississippi State University will explain why methodologists should center Black women’s experiences in the research process, including the current tensions and realities that arise when employing Black feminist autoethnography. In addition, this presentation will provide recommendations for individuals who seek to implement Black women’s autoethnography in their scholarship.

Co-Learning & Co-writing as Action Research: Community Wellbeing, Engaged Scholarship, and Creating Futures

This session focuses on co-learning and co-writing processes as action research. These collaborative processes center the wellbeing of communities, engagement of scholars supporting new generations of social activists, and the renewal and expansion of educational and career pathways. Dr. St. John provides concrete examples of co-learning and co-writing that engages students and professors across generations in action research partnerships with community organizations, schools, and corporations that solve emerging social and environmental challenges. He draws from his research designs in K-20 research, community projects, racial and class financial equity research in the US, international policy projects, and empowering social agency among youth in rising generations.

The Undergraduate Research Library Fellowship (URLF) is an exciting 10-week paid summer opportunity for students to conduct their own research on a wide range of subjects while working with a University Libraries mentor. Applications for are due February 20, 2023. This 75-minute workshop will introduce the URLF’s benefits, application process and how to develop a research proposal. In this hands-on Zoom session, participants will explore their research interests, begin to define a topic and identify their next steps in reaching out to an advisor.

The same workshop will be offered twice via Zoom meeting, and a recording will be made available for those who cannot attend.

Making People Care: Elevator Speech Development Coaching Workshop (Zoom)

This virtual interactive workshop will guide you through the strategy, steps and storytelling in the development of your ideal elevator speech so that you can bring your research passion to life for any audience. After introduction and guidance from the facilitator, participants will have the opportunity to craft their own elevator speech and workshop it with fellow participants for feedback and refinement to make drafts stronger and give others ideas on how to recraft their own elevator speech storytelling.

HHMI Investigator Program Information Session (Virtual)

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is requesting applications from basic researchers and physician scientists for its 2024 Investigator Program. Interested and eligible researchers are encouraged to attend a virtual information session hosted by the Office of Academic Affairs and the Office of Foundation Relations. This info session will cover application requirements for the HHMI Investigator Program competition, including eligibility, application components, and the review process. It will also cover general aspects of previously funded projects and provide guidance on what a well-aligned and compelling proposal should contain. Lastly, general questions will be answered during the Q&A. Please direct project-specific questions to Catherine Hunt, Director of Foundation Relations, at hunt.585@osu.edu.
